Harris Security Consultant Inc:Hotel Security Part 2

Hotel Security by Robert J. Harris
Founder/CEO, Harris Security Consultant Inc.

My name is Robert J. Harris. I am the CEO/Founder of Harris Security Consultant Inc. I run a security consultant company here in New York City. “My City” is one of the big tourist places to be at this time. My company is working on a solution to help hotels and motels to become safer. I want my friends to be safe in my city, therefore, for some time I have been checking out some of the hotels and motels in my city just to see how safe they really are. Sometimes I would check-in as a guest and other times I would just walk in and walk around the hotel. During my investigation of one hotel, I walked around and no one stopped me. I watched people check in. I walked the hallways. I went on the elevator to the top floors. What did I discover? No security! No cameras! When the fun was over, I went to the front desk and asked to speak to the house detective or the person who oversees security. The front desk person made a call. I waited 20 minutes and then my ‘boys in blue’ showed up. To make a long story short, I showed the ‘boys in blue’ my business card and said I was there to checkout security setup so my company can come up with a solution that can help safeguard my tourist friends at hotels.  They understood and there was no problem.

I decided to check out 3 more hotels to investigate their on-site security.  Hotel #1 – their security was bad! The cameras were out and no house detective on-site. I asked if there was a backup system since there were no cameras or security and found out there was none. Hotel #2 - I walked to the front desk because it seemed to be the only place to go. Why? If you want help on a security matter why go to the front desk? I think if you are a robber you are looking for where security is located, right? If you want water or a wake up call you see the front desk, for security you look for a house detective. I hope. For my investigation at Hotel #3, I went looking for the house detective. I saw three to four house detectives walking around watching the guests and me. I watched for 3 hours before I was asked if I was a guest in the hotel. It is an understatement to say they were a little slow because they walked around the hotel checking cameras and key cards and I was sitting there watching the house detectives.

Hotels need help with their security systems and management in a tremendous way.  This is where a security consultant company like mine can come in to assist hotels on how they can become a safer place.  Hotels use designers to design the space and they should also use security consultants to help them design security systems and security plans to help safeguard their visitors.  When it comes to hotel security, it is up in the air because the manager runs the show and there is usually minimal expense made on security or how to setup a security system.  They will usually use a security installer who will sell you a system, install it and be done. Each hotel is different in layout, size and the amount of guests its serves. So a security consultant can take that into consideration when designing a system for that hotel in addition to setting up a working blueprint for all the house detectives to follow written by a security consultant.  Hotel security cannot be ‘one size fits all”, a security consultant can help design a system that works best for that particular hotel.

In general, security (or as I like to call them house detectives) in a hotel or motel should make the guests feel safe. On a side note, I think hotel security should be called House Detectives. I like this term because it reminds me of the good ole days back in the 20s and 30s when security in a hotel was called the house detective, it’s a classier title. House detectives should be in public view. When guests checkout, the key cards should be invalid. Monitoring systems should be in public view with cameras on each floor and in the elevators.  All of these should be in place for the hotel or motel guests to see and feel secure.

Here is proof of how easy it is to get into a hotel. I found these cards lying around. With these key cards you could reprogram them and they could become master key cards that will leave the place up for grabs.

In my business people are first when it comes to being safe -- whether at home, on the road, or at hotels.

Harris Security Consultant Inc:That Fine Blue Line

To all the men and women that are Police Officers that were killed in the line of duty this year, I like to call the last roll call for the last time. At this time the last roll call is to long for this tour so I will just say ‘10-4’ and ‘God Bless’ and ‘Thank You’ for your service for the last year. When I read a newspaper the first thing I see is a police officer was killed in the line of duty here in the USA and around the world. In my city when I see a police officer, I ask how your tour was today. He or she will come back and say it was okay. I jumped and said no it was a good tour because you came back and you are going home safe. So to all of the men and women I say Thank you for making me feel safe here and around the world. Being Police Officers is more than just a job; this is something people fail to see. The police officer is here to help and protect you. That's the fine line you fail to see when you see a police officer standing about. When you see a police officer say 'Thank you' and '10-4 all is good'.

On city bus lines where the only authority figure on board is usually the driver, it's hard to maintain a tight level of security. Video surveillance cameras are working to help solve this problem. Many buses are now equipped with security cameras. By functioning as deterrents to criminal activity and inappropriate behavior, these cameras provide passengers and drivers with an added sense of security, and can also supply valuable evidence during criminal investigations.

Comprised of detection systems at the checkout or exit of a store, the systems work with small electronic tags or labels that are affixed to merchandise. Over the last 10 years in USA, surveillance systems have been widely used in Small Business Enterprises & Residential homes in order to meet the security challenges. Moreover due to the rapid growth of the Indian economy into remote regions of tier 3 cities, surveillance systems helps in tracking the business operations of branches in other locations as well as maintaining the safety & security of its staff members in the office premises. Businesses and large companies now depend on advanced security systems in order to keep the vulnerable areas of their workplace secured from the aggressive business competitive threats. Security Systems are not only meant to alert business owners of security breaches such as burglaries and vandalisms but also of employee theft. However you can also monitor or keep a close watch over what happens at your workplace by using video surveillance system.
In its truest form, a CCTV camera is an Analog video camera that transmits signals via coaxial cable to a single central location for monitoring, recording, and video analysis. Until recently most cameras have been of the analogue type, producing good quality images at an affordable price. Network cameras have now developed to a high performance capability that allows them to compete with or even exceed the performance of traditional analogue CCTV cameras. An IP camera captures and sends video footage over an IP network, allowing users to view, record, store and manage their video surveillance images either locally or remotely over the network infrastructure. It's no secret that the future of video surveillance is in IP-based solutions; but that doesn't mean you need to throw out your existing analog cameras as you make the transition. Hybrid DVRs and video encoders allow you to build a future-proof IP surveillance network while retaining the analog security cameras you already have on hand.

Harris Security Consultant Inc:Does the big city really care about the little people?

Public Housing Building

Does the big city really care about our safety and well being?

The answer is yes and no.

Yes they care but up to certain point.. where it is financially feasible for them to care..
No they don't care..when they can't find a way to make it financially feasible for them.

Case in point...

In big Metropolis City (named changed to protect the innocent) approximately 42 million dollars was set aside to purchase and install security cameras for 80 public housing buildings. This money was set aside over the last eight years. Here we are in 2012...

Are the cameras installed? No

Has crime increased in these buildings? Yes

Why such a delay? No comment

Really?

For almost 8 years the city has put aside millions of dollars for the safety of the residents of public housing and nothing has been done. No explanation as to why or why not.  It wasn't until the recent shootings of a toddler and police officer and a woman being stabbed to death,  that the question has come up again. It wasn't until a city newspaper probed into the situation that a vague start date was given to begin the installation of these cameras.

And to make matters worse, the chairman of the housing authority lives quite comfortably in a camera secured building.  It would have been easy for some to pull the 'race' card on this but when the head is the same constituency as the majority of those living in public housing projects you begin to wonder. Why?

This isn't about black or white..It is about green.  It wasn't financially lucarative for anyone (officials, installers, etc) to install these cameras because it would mean that they would have to spend money not just in installation but in hiring people to monitor the cameras.

What!?! Create jobs in this economy?

We will never know the exact reasons why the housing authority sat on this money and delayed camera installation for so long. in the meantime, all we can do is wait and watch to see if they do something. In the meantime..how many more innocent people will get hurt or lose their lives because it wasn't financially lucrative to install cameras and save lives.

Stayed tuned....
