Harris Security Consultant Inc:Hotel Security Part Three

Hotel Security by Robert J. Harris
Founder/CEO, Harris Security Consultant Inc.

My name is Robert J. Harris. I am the CEO/Founder of Harris Security Consultant Inc. I run a security consultant company here in New York City. “My City” is one of the big tourist places to be at this time. My company is working on a solution to help hotels and motels to become safer. I want my friends to be safe in my city, therefore, for some time I have been checking out some of the hotels and motels in my city just to see how safe they really are. Sometimes I would check-in as a guest and other times I would just walk in and walk around the hotel. During my investigation of one hotel, I walked around and no one stopped me. I watched people check in. I walked the hallways. I went on the elevator to the top floors. What did I discover? No security! No cameras! When the fun was over, I went to the front desk and asked to speak to the house detective or the person who oversees security. The front desk person made a call. I waited 20 minutes and then my ‘boys in blue’ showed up. To make a long story short, I showed the ‘boys in blue’ my business card and said I was there to checkout security setup so my company can come up with a solution that can help safeguard my tourist friends at hotels.  They understood and there was no problem.

I decided to check out 3 more hotels to investigate their on-site security.  Hotel #1 – their security was bad! The cameras were out and no house detective on-site. I asked if there was a backup system since there were no cameras or security and found out there was none. Hotel #2 - I walked to the front desk because it seemed to be the only place to go. Why? If you want help on a security matter why go to the front desk? I think if you are a robber you are looking for where security is located, right? If you want water or a wake up call you see the front desk, for security you look for a house detective. I hope. For my investigation at Hotel #3, I went looking for the house detective. I saw three to four house detectives walking around watching the guests and me. I watched for 3 hours before I was asked if I was a guest in the hotel. It is an understatement to say they were a little slow because they walked around the hotel checking cameras and key cards and I was sitting there watching the house detectives.

Hotels need help with their security systems and management in a tremendous way.  This is where a security consultant company like mine can come in to assist hotels on how they can become a safer place.  Hotels use designers to design the space and they should also use security consultants to help them design security systems and security plans to help safeguard their visitors.  When it comes to hotel security, it is up in the air because the manager runs the show and there is usually minimal expense made on security or how to setup a security system.  They will usually use a security installer who will sell you a system, install it and be done. Each hotel is different in layout, size and the amount of guests its serves. So a security consultant can take that into consideration when designing a system for that hotel in addition to setting up a working blueprint for all the house detectives to follow written by a security consultant.  Hotel security cannot be ‘one size fits all”, a security consultant can help design a system that works best for that particular hotel.

In general, security (or as I like to call them house detectives) in a hotel or motel should make the guests feel safe. On a side note, I think hotel security should be called House Detectives. I like this term because it reminds me of the good ole days back in the 20s and 30s when security in a hotel was called the house detective, it’s a classier title. House detectives should be in public view. When guests checkout, the key cards should be invalid. Monitoring systems should be in public view with cameras on each floor and in the elevators.  All of these should be in place for the hotel or motel guests to see and feel secure.

Here is proof of how easy it is to get into a hotel. I found these cards lying around. With these key cards you could reprogram them and they could become master key cards that will leave the place up for grabs.

In my business people are first when it comes to being safe -- whether at home, on the road, or at hotels.

Harris Security Consultant Inc:That Fine Blue Line

To all the men and women that are Police Officers that were killed in the line of duty this year, I like to call the last roll call for the last time. At this time the last roll call is to long for this tour so I will just say ‘10-4’ and ‘God Bless’ and ‘Thank You’ for your service for the last year. When I read a newspaper the first thing I see is a police officer was killed in the line of duty here in the USA and around the world. In my city when I see a police officer, I ask how your tour was today. He or she will come back and say it was okay. I jumped and said no it was a good tour because you came back and you are going home safe. So to all of the men and women I say Thank you for making me feel safe here and around the world. Being Police Officers is more than just a job; this is something people fail to see. The police officer is here to help and protect you. That's the fine line you fail to see when you see a police officer standing about. When you see a police officer say 'Thank you' and '10-4 all is good'.

Harris Security Consultant Inc:Why Pay More?

Here the dome camera for the building

I was walking by this building and saw this big dome camera in the front door.  So why do people pay more for cameras because an installer said it will work well?
If you asked a security design company, we would place a small dome camera in front of the building for less money and it works for the building. If you look at these pics you will see.

Harris Security Consultant Inc:A walk around a big city

 I was walking the street of a big city to look at the way security systems are set-up. Some are good and some are bad. Some security systems are set-up to watch people coming and going -- Like retail store security systems are   set-up to see if people are shoplifting. If you walk down a city street you can see security cameras watching you walking to where you are going to. Is Big Brother on the streets of the city.  Oh, OK back to my walk of the big city.  I look all around me and see how security is a big business here. Ok, why is it no one uses a  security design company to help them set–up security systems?  People run to an installer to sell systems that may work for more money an installer is here to make money off you. My company is here to help you to design systems to safeguard the home and business. Ok, back to my walk ... one more time I see security systems in city parks and office buildings and in banks. I ask why? Is it we want people to watch the coming and goings of my life to safeguard me?

Harris Security Consultant Inc:Building security into environmental design

Whether it's for an existing facility or for new construction, some of the more common hardware selected for school security includes:
* Closed-circuit television cameras
Cost-effective and capable, these television cameras are most effective when used to observe public corridors, stairwells and exterior doors, as well as larger spaces during school, such as the cafeteria and gymnasium.
* Door security hardware
Schools that use generators can lock doors electromagnetically, which translates into a force of either 600 or 1,200 pounds.
* Panic buttons
These, along with intercom systems, go hand-in-hand with many school security systems.
* Electronic security panels
Used primarily to monitor doorways, door hardware is connected to a security-control console that records all alarms.
* ID cards
These allow access to designated users, and they monitor and track who enters which room at what time.
* Metal detectors
Metal detectors can be costly, and each one requires three people to operate it. Furthermore, it doesn't make sense to guard one of the school's entrances with a metal detector if there won't be one at every other entry and exit. A better investment might be a hand held metal detector for use on a case-by-case basis.

Harris Security Consultant inc:Hotel Security Part One

Unfortunately, many travelers succumb to what Harris security consultant calls the "Disneyland effect," behaving as if they've left the real world—and real danger—behind. His advice, in good times and bad: "Don't drop your guard or assume that a hotel or motel is going to provide the level of security you think it should."

Harris security consultant advises travelers to thoroughly check out a hotel before checking in and to avoid properties right off interstate highways; they are highly visible targets, easily accessible to criminals. Nor should you assume that properties belonging to a national chain are safer, as franchises don't necessarily have to follow corporate security standards.

Harris security consultant adds that motels with interior hallways are generally safer than those with doorways opening on to parking lots and that doors should have both dead bolts and peepholes. If a motel is shabby or the staff seem in- attentive, move on.

Security experts differ over the effectiveness of high-tech devices like surveillance cameras in stairwell landings and other locations. "Guests see them and say 'I'll be safe here.' But if the cameras are not monitored 24 hours a day, you've got a problem on your hands."

Harris Security Consultant Inc:Recording Devices

Digital video recorders (DVRs) have replaced VCRs as the workhorses of the video surveillance industry. While they are still somewhat more expensive than VCRs, their advantages are immense.
One of the most significant is their ability to adjust to what they see: if they're recording a static image, such as the inside of a warehouse at night, they may only record 1 frame every 5 or 10 seconds. But when they detect movement, they can instantly switch to full video to capture any suspicious activity.
Because they record to hard drives, you can instantly watch any specific time – no lengthy fast-forwarding and searching for the right moment. They also let you jump to 'events' – situations where the picture changed. And don't overlook the fact that they don't have tapes: you won't have to worry about storage or tapes deteriorating.

Harris Security Consultant Inc:how do security cameras work ?

Security cameras are based on the simple fundamental of monitoring the possible locations of danger and optionally, recording it. The video cameras shoot everything like any normal camera and same can be seen real time. Either you can employ someone to watch the recordings or yourself watch it later to detect any suspicious activity around or inside your home. You can also record audio in the covered area.
